Title: Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Pie
Description: This documentary shows how one woman put the "soul" in Soul Food. Edna Lewis prepared and elevated the respect for southern cooking and touched many lives through her delicious meals. The film follows her life among sub-alternate cultures such as growing-up in the former-slave community of Freetown to working as a typist for the Communist Party in pre-WWII New York City. Throughout her life, Edna's personality and cooking managed to touch the hearts and bellies of many, including southern luminaries Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, and Truman Capote (who would constantly pester her to make biscuits). It may not be as delicious as Edna’s signature meals, but this film has plenty of flavor.
